Mozambique holidays are fast becoming a popular choice for South Africans in search of exquisite beaches, a variety of watersports and world-class lodges – and all within convenient reach ‘next door’. The capital, Maputo, is a busy port with well-preserved Portuguese Colonial architecture, fascinating history and vibrant nightlife at numerous bars and nightclubs. Wherever you go, you’ll enjoy some of the best seafood you’ve ever tasted. The prawns are legendary!

Among the top tourist attractions in Mozambique is Vilanculos, the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. This string of sandy islands lies roughly 20km from the mainland, all offering unspoiled natural beauty. It is also Mozambique’s most important habitat for marine animals, home to a wide variety of marine life including the last viable population of the endangered dugong.

With 2,500km of Indian Ocean coastline to explore, it’s no surprise that much of your Mozambique trip will involve the sea. Laze on sandy beaches, snorkel luminescent coral reefs, or go surfing, fishing and scuba diving. On land, the capital of Maputo is a joy to explore, with its Natural History Museum, Victorian railway station and sandstone 19th-Century fortress. It also offers a vibrant nightlife at its many nightclubs.

Among the exciting places to visit in Mozambique is the Quirimbas Archipelago, where you can go island hopping. Inhaca Island is home to a fascinating maritime museum and historic lighthouse. It also offers beautiful beaches, a mangrove-lined coastline and brightly coloured reefs off its west coast. There’s also the little village of Marracuene, just 40km from Maputo. From there you ferry to the tiny island of Macaneta with its legendary beaches. Here, you can enjoy whale watching, game fishing and sightings of the giant leatherback turtle.
